Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
To observe the true beauty of the high desert you should make
the trip to Red Rock National Conservation Area. Head west on
Charleston Boulevard about 16 miles from Las Vegas. The Bureau
of Land Management operates a visitors' center where they exhibit
plant, animal and desert life. Don't miss the drive around the
13 mile scenic loop as it winds through the colorful red rocks,
Joshua trees and the unusually beautiful desert scenery. Admission

Leave the loop by exiting south onto Highway 159 (Charleston Blvd.) and go 3 miles
to Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. This lush piece of property became a ranch in
the 1860s, and it was designated a state park in 1971. The red ranch house, has white
picket fences, long green lawns, and a beautiful mountain backdrop, just perfect
for a picnic. Admission is $3 per car. Open daily from 8-7. Ranch house open Friday

Continue another mile
on Highway 59 until you come to Old Nevada, a western theme
park. Here the Wild West comes to life with gunfights and hangings
staged in the street, silent movies, an opera house, museums,
a cemetery and a minitrain that runs around the grounds. Admission
$6.50 adults, $5.50 senior citizens, $4 children 5-11. Open
